Synopsis
Unable to purchase a $50,000 digital projector, a group of film fanatics in rural Pennsylvania fight to keep a dying drive-in theater alive by screening only vintage 35mm film prints and working entirely for free.

My review from late last night seems to have been deleted, oh well, long story short... I’ve missed the last few weekend events I’ve wanted to attend but there’s still a slim chance I might be able to make it to Mahonig’s Camp Blood V weekend and the glorious thing is not only can I sleep there (if needed) but I can buy 3 popcorns (and a drink) at Mahonig for the price it costs for entry at any AMC/Regal/Alamo and the staff (who work for free)/clientele/atmos is a thousand percent better with zero $10 truffle popcorn or $17 chicken tenders and no zit faced film dude bro employee with a ‘clever’ meme Fellini shirt attempting to hit on my…

“How do I look? Do I look like a disco queen?”
Bo Burnham posits, “Maybe life on earth could be heaven. Doesn’t just the thought of it make it worth a try?” This is a story about the folks who answered “yes,” a makeshift family that gathers to keep these projectors running, avengers assembled for a common nostalgia and an all-consuming passion. Any seasoned cinephile will recognize parts of themselves all over At the Drive-In.

I’ve only been here a handful of times, but each of them have been some of the greatest viewing experiences I’ve ever had and I’m so happy it exists—I adore this place, adore the people, adore the double features, adore the dedication from everyone involved, and I adore this documentary. I guess I’m biased? Ask me if I give a shit? I can’t wait to head there before summer ends and in the fall.
These people don’t do this for monetary gain, they do it because they want to—Think about that.

Like, my 8th revisit. This time with my homieHaydenand it was awesome.
“Everyone’s still working for free”
This doc gives me life—it makes me happy about preservation via no ulterior motives... no scams, no bullshit—Just movie love. Is this thing an ad for the drive in? One could say it is.. but they’d be dead wrong because this is about love via preservation (and that’s hard for the majority of the population to understand) and even though I’ve traveled quite a bit in my time (all over) this particular place is one of my top five favorite places in the world.
There’s more heart shown by the people working for free in this than a huge majority of Hollywood/Washington/rich people/AND blue collar people (who always remind you how blue colllar they are) and it’s marvelous.
The alternative drive in.

Sober. Undramatic. Badass.
Take a chance on your dreams before you stop having them. -

I guess I have a real bias for my love of this film, considering my wedding is featured in it. Al truly captured the spirit of the place and the people I love so much with his film.

I continue to implore anyone with even a passing interest in film to watch this warm and entertaining documentary. Which means that yes, absolutely everyone with a Letterboxd account should watch it!

I'm in this documentary (yes, that guy; I'm extra), and being about a place and people I love dearly, I can't pretend to have any sort of even relative objectivity on the matter. That said, I think it shows great storytelling prowess, and I was deeply moved. Thank you, Alex.

Just a truly lovely documentary. Totally captures the feeling of being an oddball working with lovable oddballs at a cool old theater and truly loving film. These are so much My People. Totally warm vibe to this documentary, lots of laughs, a great time.
I gotta get to this place someday!

A simple yet beautiful film about pure movie love. It’s about film fanatics from all walks of life who come together to keep an old drive-in going.
Just a few years ago, The Mahoning Drive-In theater in Lehighton, PA faced the choice of either buying a $50,000 digital projector or closing down. Then a third option popped up of showing older films on 35mm and they rolled the dice and gave it a shot. This is the document of their make or break summer and the people who keep this place running. It was amazing to see the owner and all his employees basically work for free just to be close to the movies and to do what they love. This is one of my favorite discoveries of the year.

A good documentary needs a hook or story to keep interest. This has neither.
